The Fund for African Relief and Education (FARE) was established in July, 1995 as a tax exempt charity in order to create a targeted funding mechanism able to respond rapidly to acute needs in situations of extreme poverty, war and despair. For the past ten years, FARE has helped individuals, families and local groups in its priority areas of education, health and income generation. FARE’s goal is to help people gain the skills and resources they need to help themselves and become self-supporting. To this end, FARE funds:
• School fees at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels;
• Fees for vocational training institutes;
• Computer training
• School books and supplies;
• Student health insurance;
• Basic medical and dental costs for FARE grantees;
• Emergency relief to save lives;
• Micro-business start up costs;
• Shelter for homeless beneficiaries.
In addition to raising funds in the United States and Europe, FARE also seeks donations locally in Africa. For example, FARE has received donated food and clothing and a refrigerator in Sierra Leone; funds from Africans in Africa wishing to support our work and used books.
